A few nights back I had some time to browse the internet. Recently OMG Yum! has been on my mind (I am feeling really inspired by food right now). So, I went online and Googled “food photography”. Some seriously incredible stuff came up in the images and then I thought to myself “wow, here I was thinking I was decent… but who am I kidding? I suck compared to these images”. LOL, negative… I know but here let me explain. I am not defeating my skills in anyway because to be honest, I excel at portraiture because I have spent quite a while studying it, studying how to pose and light people, etc. I have not taken the time to study how to photograph food, so naturally I am making all the mistakes newbies make (as I am sure the pro food photographers are thinking). I am okay with that because I am SO VERY PROUD of this blog 😀
After browsing beautiful imagery for a while I got thinking… “Man, I really need to get some pretty dishes and glasses to use for my photos.” I need to mix things up a bit and work on my lighting and “artistic eye”. So, today, I went to the World Market and I browsed around. I saw many beautiful things but I really didn’t want to spend a lot… Since, I was about to meet a friend for lunch I decided to leave and “come back after lunch” (yeah, I didn’t haha. I would have spent like $100… I am sure of it!). After lunch, I stopped in at Home Goods to see what they had in the way of glassware and dishware. I also wanted to see if they had dark wooden cutting boards to use as a backdrop (see below) to place my plate on. I didn’t immediate see what I was looking for so I went to the pan isle to find Adam a new burrito pan. I browsed around and then remembered that I wanted to look at their place mats. I ended up in this one isle that I thought was what I was looking for. It turned out that it was a random clearance isle. I found this one lonely place mat that looked like… a slab of dark wood! OMG! I was so excited because it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Even though it is vinyl, it doesn’t matter because it is the look that I need not the material. AAAAND it was only $2! It gets better, I also found two white bowls on clearance for $4.50 because it was an incomplete set of 4 bowls (reg. price $12.99). I felt quite accomplished at what I had found! 😀 I styled my new bargain find below with a lemon and a lime 😛 I am so cruising through the clearance items at stores more often!
